It’s the Time of year for Thanksgiving and Gratitude as we prepare for the busy holiday season!

Time to Turn Back Time!
On November 7, 2010 at 2am we Fall Back by setting the clocks back one hour. It’s a good weekend to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors! Also, the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) recommends that everyone have at least one working carbon monoxide detector in their homes. See our safety tips section below for more information.

Time to Fight the Flu!
During this busy season remember to take measures to help protect against getting the flu! The number one action recommended by the CDC is to get a flu vaccine. It’s not too late to get your child a flu vaccine, just call our office to schedule an appointment. Check out the CDC’s “Take 3” Actions to Fight the Flu” tips.

Time for Family Fun Time!
Family Fun activities can be great exercise as well! It’s never too early or too late to help your children develop an interest in healthy exercise habits. Children who are inactive or overweight may find that participating in an activity with the family is the motivator they need and helps them to find activities that they enjoy!

Some ideas are:

  • playing ball
  • playing tag
  • swimming
  • horseback riding
  • bike riding
  • kite flying
  • going for a walk or a hike
  • walk the mall (you don’t have to actually buy anything!)

Whatever you chose, have fun! If the weather prohibits outdoor activity, you can still spend time with the family doing puzzles or reading. For a list of our favorite books check out our Reading List Suggestions. If your child has any health issues, physical limitations or has been sedentary, talk to your pediatrician before beginning a more active way of life.

Time for Safety Tips

  • Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, tasteless toxic gas which can kill you before you are aware of it. Exposure at lower levels can be mistaken for the flu or even just fatigue. Moderate levels can cause blurred vision, impaired brain function, chest pain. Higher levels can be fatal. Fireplaces, furnaces, wood stoves, gas appliances & water heaters, gas powered equipment (even if outside the home), garages and tobacco smoke are some of the sources of carbon monoxide. A simple Carbon Monoxide Detector can help save your families life. For more information read the EPA’s “Introduction to Indoor Air Quality”.
  • Blowin’ in the Wind. Leaves are falling and with them come leaf blowers. Here are some safety tips for using a leaf blower:
    • Don't point the leaf blower at people or animals when using it. Dust or debris can fly out and hit them or get in their eyes.
    • Keep children out of leaf blowing area to protect them from flying debris injury as well as their hearing.
    • Wear goggles, ear protection, long pants and long sleeves. If it’s dry out add a dust mask.
    • When adding fuel let the engine cool first, slowly loosen the cap to relieve pressure, add the correct gas/fuel mixture and then tighten gas cap when done.
    • Before working on the blower, stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire.
    • Don’t leave it out where young children can play with it and cause injuries.
    • Before storing allow the engine to cool completely.
    • Leaf blowers are noisy so please be considerate of others.

Time for a Little Manicure
It’s not your imagination; baby’s nails do grow faster! They will need trimming or filing at least once a week to keep up! Try trimming your baby’s nails while they sleep. Push down the fingertip skin to get the clipper/scissors around both sides of the nail and to keep from cutting the baby’s finger; then file rough edges. Now you’ve finished one thing on your list for the week!

Time for Teens

Teens have intense peer pressure for them to participate in sex & drug use. Having some pre planned responses and plans of action can help your child navigate through these difficult situations.

There is also the danger of “date-rape” drugs, some of which are odorless and colorless. Please take the time to read the tips in the brief American Academy of Pediatrics article Helping Your Teens Resist Pressure to Try Drugs. It provides some ideas for helping your children deal with the pressures of drug use as well as information on “date-rape” drugs that could spare your child from experiencing one of the most traumatic events of her life and maybe save your child’s or a friend’s life.
